That's why I'm easy... I'm easy like Sunday morning...

...denn es ist Sonntag morgen, halb elf, und ich genieße eine Tasse (wenn ich sage "Tasse", meine ich "Pappbecher") Kaffee und ein ausgewogenes Frühstück (wenn ich sage "ausgewogenes Früstück", meine ich "Schokodonuts und einen Muffin") zuhause (wenn ich sage "zuhause", meine ich "im Labor").
Nan und ich halten wie jedes Wochenende die Stellung hier und versuchen, unseren Erfolg als Wissenschaftler mit Gewalt herbeizuführen. Es scheint zu funktionieren, denn meine Gele sahen in letzter Zeit gar nicht schlecht aus.
Ein paar Worte zum Thema "amerikanischer Arbeitsschutz": Diejenigen, die schon mal in einem europäischen Labor gearbeitet haben, wissen, wie penibel auf den Verbleib von genmanipuliertem Material, radioaktivem Abfall, Chemikalien wie Ethidiumbromid etc geachtet wird. Das wird hier etwas anders gehandhabt. Das Zauberwort heißt "Toss it", was soviel bedeutet wie "ab ins Waschbecken/den regulären Mülleimer/ne Plastiktüte". Das Sonderbare ist, es scheint zu funktionieren.
Ähnlich verhält es sich bei der Trennung von Büro und Labor, was in Europa mit einer Vehemenz betrieben wird, als handle es sich um die Trennung von Kirche und Staat. Hier hingegen hat jeder seinen Computer und Papierkram neben, oder am liebsten gleich AUF der Laborbank, wenn zwischen den ganzen Kaffeetassen noch Platz ist. Das mag ich, denn es macht das Leben ein Vielfaches einfacher, nicht immer zwei Korridore weit laufen zu müssen, bloß weil man etwas aufschreiben will...

...because it is Sunday morning, half past ten, and I am enjoying a good cup (and by "cup", I mean "plastic cup") of coffee and a well-balanced breakfast (by "well-balanced breakfast". I mean "a chocolate-frosted donut and a muffin") at home (and by "at home", I mean "at the lab").
nan and I are keeping the science up as every weekend, in order to force our success as scientists upn our work. It seems to work, though, since my gels tend to look good these days.
Now, a few words about workplace safety. All of you who've worked in Eurpoean laboratories over the past years know, how painstakingly careful waste such as radioactive materials, genetically engineered organisms, or ethidium bromide are handled. Well, here they rely on a more open-minded apprach, which can roughly be described by the term "just toss it", refering to dumping any of the above materials into sink, trash can, or at the most, a separate plastic bag which is then to go into the regular trash. but the strangest thing is, it doesn't seem to cause any problems!
Similarly, the almost religious division between "office" and "lab", as practised in europe, has little resemblance to the American research area structure. Here, the computer and papers are stacked next to, if not directly ON the bench, which is sometimes only prohibited by the pile of coffee cups on it. It actually makes life a lot easier, if you don't have to run back and forth between two hallways just to write something down.
